Sounds like NH saw a good opportunity to take advantage of DL's withdrawal and SQ's downgauging from the A380 to B777.
However, if Garuda joins the market then we'll be up to 9 flights a day on TYO-LAX (10 including LAX-KIX on JL). Sounds like way too much capacity.

Yeah, but LAX-TYO has historically been overcapacity. Back in 2006, we had 2x JL, and 1x on NH, UA, AA, NW, KE, SQ (total 8x daily) and everyone except AA flew 747s. Then in 2012, we had 2x NH, DL, and 1x UA, AA, JL, KE, SQ, MH (10x daily). Since then, DL, MH, and KE have all cut LAX-NRT, SQ downgauged from a 471 seat A380 to a 264 seat 77W, and AA added LAX-HND on a 772. 2017 has actually seen the least capacity on LAX-TYO for at least the last 15 years. I think NH should have no problem filling the extra frequency, especially since it has added so much connectivity to China and SE Asia in the past 3 years.
We do also have SAN-NRT and LAX-KIX these days, the latter which wasn't around for many years.
I wish NH would spread the schedule out more a bit, for example with an evening departure from NRT. Maybe in the future NH will put the A380 on this route?

And the flight is off to a terrible start.
10/29 - Inaugural flight, delayed 1.5 hours due to typhoon. Return also delayed.
10/30 - NH 176 delayed 45 minutes, return flight miraculously clocked in only 9 minutes late.
10/31 - NH 176 delayed 22 min. Return flight delayed TBA due to aircraft maintenance.
Seriously, ... is wrong with ANA's SFO/LAX flights these days? A 1 hr 40 min turnaround time is cutting it way too close. No room for any slight (even 15 min) delay. Plus, they time the flights so aggressively, there's no room for slack at all. It only takes one of the following to result in both segments delayed.
1. Flow control at NRT: it rains often, and 17:00 is the peak hour for departures. Often been held held 20 min at gate waiting for departure clearance.
2. Unfavorable tailwinds/headwinds.
3. Waiting for gate at SFO/LAX. Both are super congested with Asian arrivals at that hour.
4. Tight turnaround times. 1 hr 40-45 min is simply way too aggressive. This occurs both on the US and Japan ends. So if there's no slack, a 20 minute delay can easily snowball into a bigger issue for 2 continuous days.
At least JAL allows 2 hours of ground time at LAX. And UA pads schedules to prevent this crap from happening. ANA should take an example from their SEA, ORD, IAD, or IAH flights that are much less delay prone.
