Novotel Barcelona City
I stayed there in January for a leisure stay. The hotel was a pleasant surprise and I would be happy to go back.
Little enigmas to help pass the time while waiting for a lift.
Check In
Check-in was efficient and I was given a key to my room quickly. I was upgraded to a Suite from a regular room, so a 3 level upgrade (this hotel has regular, family, Executive - no lounge though - and Suite). The clerck welcomed me warmly and explained the hotel features.
The keyslip are clever and something that Accor should use worldwide: they are colored coded with your status, include the welcome drink coupons that need to be ripped to be used.
Room
The suite was spacious, located in a corner with floor to ceiling windows. They did not really furnished it though and it seems a bit empty, but this was comfortable enough. Although the lack of easily accessible plug is a problem. They should follow Hilton leads and replace this glass table by a proper desk including plugs.
There was a nesspresso machine, two closets and a safe.
The bathroom was large, tub and a shower. Slippers and bathrobe provided, lots of amenities (dental kit, razor, vanity set, comb) plus the standard Novotel toilettries.
The bed was comfortable but I was disappointed by the pillows. I would really like for Novotel to upgrade their pillows to something more ergonomic than those, which are too soft to comfortably sleep on the side. A pillow menu would be better.
Also once again the first evening one need to spend five minutes figuring out to turn off all the lamps. There is no master switch for everything.
Nice view to had if the room is located in the right direction.
Dining
I had dinner my first evening there, after arriving. The food was good and the menu varied enough, with local foods and not just the usual hotel comfort food. The server was really nice and accomodating but it was so slow.
Breakfast was good, large spread (although lacking in cold vegetables options) including homemade cakes, good viennoiseries and cheeses. I can sense that in high season there might be a long wait during peak hours.
Location
Location was good for me. It is near the metro station Glories, so easy access from/to the airport (Bus A1/A2 till Spanya then change to metro L1), the station is 400 meters from the airport.
There is a large shopping mall beside, with 15 restaurants, so large choice of food is one wants to eat nearby in the evening. The Sagreda Famila is 15 minutes walk away and the Gotic quarter and Eixample near by subway.
Overall
The hotel was quite good, good location and good rooms, nice treatment of Accor members. The only down point is the inattentive room cleaning. Nothing major but they forgot to add more shower gel one day, another day forgot to empty a trash can.
I would be happy to return to the same hotel.
-Did you receive any welcome amenity? What was it?
-What one can get with the drink vouchers?
-How about early check-in or late check-out?
I did not ask about early check-in or late check out.
For the welcome gift: any drink except wine, champagne and cocktails. I ordered a mocktail; the bartender says "You can not use this with ... no it is OK actually, nevermind".
