In Toronto, there is a 3% Destination Marketing Program fee and it is optional. You can decline to pay it, and I have successfully done so at every instance.

I "opt out" at check-in and make sure it's been removed at check-out.
Lots of articles on the subject.

I tried to get it removed in Ottawa and the agent said he couldn't remove it I would have to go to the tourism centre to have it removed?
How hard do you have to push to get it removed? Or is it mandatory in Ottawa?

All I say at check-out (I actually usually call later in the morning to check-out instead of waiting in line) is "can you also please remove the DMF from the folio?" Never had any pushback. In fact, my employer has a large message when booking hotels (via our corporate portal) in Toronto to decline the DMF.

Which Ottawa property was this? I stayed at the Four Points and Sheraton and did not see the DMF on my folio.
However, I checked my folio and saw this - Taxe Hebergement 3.5%
The other taxes were GST and PST.
