Check In

We arrived at Manoir Hovey 8:15pm after a five-and-half-hour flight from SFO and a 90-minute drive from Montreal, car driver arranged through the hotel. Check In was swift, no more than 5 minutes, then we and our bags were driven to the suite which sits atop a ridge overlooking Lake Massawippi in the southeast countryside of Quebec.

Room

Our expansive suite was one of two in a large cottage set apart from the main buildings. Heated swimming pool for just those two suites and each unit has a hot tub on the spacious balcony with beautiful forest and lake views. It is autumn now, so those views were working up to spectacular. Suite, (Oriole or #49) consisted of entrance foyer, small kitchen (all appliances and accouterment), well furnished living room, large bedroom with walk-in closet and gargantuan bathroom. Off the bedroom, a large balcony with table, chairs and hot tub. Bed exceptionally comfortable. Bedroom also fearured a wonderfully comfortable reading chair with ottoman and lamp.

Decor was more contemporary than my druthers but I came to  quite like it; also functional and comfortable. Climate control worked perfectly and had good range. It was unseasonably warm during our week-long stay.

Dining

The fancy house restaurant was in high haute cuisine mode which we twice enjoyed. I no longer am a fan of these protracted meals with all the service trimmings but our friends from Brooklyn loved it. The Tap Room venue was more to our taste whilst yet offering a varied menu. Meals were very good and room service was exceptional. Best club sandwich EVER. Good wine list. Afternoon tea and scrumptious scones.

Location

The lake and surrounding countryside was drop-dead gorgeous. I so wish we had discovered it sooner. Not an easy trip from California so knows when we'll return.

Overall

The first floor of the manor featured a lovely old-fashioned library/sitting room, check-in/concierge desk, the large main restaurant, at the back, a deep and shady porch that must have been 250 feet long. Cushioned wicker furniture including requisite rocking chairs. Surrounding grounds abundantly gardened with roses, dahlias, marigolds, rudbeckia, begonias, ageratum, statice, and more. Lawns and garden feature many comfortable seating areas and heated swimming pool.
