Planning

Ever so often I end up needing to go to NYC. To see my family. With my kids. So there are 5 of us... in NYC... I don't know if you've ever seen a NYC hotel room but I've seen bigger broom closets... Families of 5 are always a pain for hotel stays... no rooms can adequately contain us. Places we've stayed in NYC are the London (2 bedroom suite), the Surrey (two bedroom suite) and the Andaz 5th Ave (again 2 bedroom suite). Of the 3, the Andaz actually gives us the most bang for the buck because when it comes to family travel I tend to try to be as thrifty as possible (to save the vacation dollars for my wife and I, of course). This trip had us coming in January, which we all know has unpredictable weather... I had initially booked us at the London, because their two bedroom suites were very agressively priced... however, the PH, with their amazing indoor pool,  released a 3rd night free so I contacted Besvisor who worked his magic and had us confirmed into a Residential suite with connecting double bed for a semi reasonable sum of money....

Location

The location works quite well for us... Some may hate the mid town location as being souless, which it is but there is great proxmity to the Park and the Q train, which works great for our family... we are able to walk to my sisters/parent's place from there (and when I say walk, I mean I walk and my kids all pile on our sit and stand and get pushed...)

Arrival/Check-In

We drove the family mobile, aka the minivan and self parked about a block away.. The hotel was asking for $90/night for parking while I was able to find a place that only charged $45/night (granted they forgot our oversized vehicle charge). So we arrived at the hotel on foot, with all our kids and luggage. The entrance is on 57th street, but the actual lobby is on the 5th floor. First service strike is that no offer was made to help with luggage. Honestly, it's like they saw a drowning man and looked the other way... anyway we managed to make it up to the 5th floor where the check in desk was... check in was quick(no offer of in suite check in), but I did ask at check in re: breakfast credits/virtuoso credit from two rooms being properly applied to the 1 main room. More on this later. No escort offered (or really needed)

Room

The room is the entire reason we picked the PH. They've changed their room categories but Besvisor booked us One Bedroom City View Suite (formally West Side Suite) +Two Double City View (formally Park Deluxe Double) with a confirmed upgrade to One Bedroom Residential Suite (formally Park Executive Suite)+Two Double City View (formally Park Deluxe Double). Get all that? This was the best option with a interior connecting door and I think that we ended up with 2,000+ sq feet- a veritable mansion by NYC standard. Lots and lots of room, which was the priority for me as I don't sleep well near my kids and my kids don't sleep well near me... The girls got the double connecting room, while kid #1 (aka the boy ) got the living room... One thing to note is that they charge $75/night for a rollaway so kid #1 got the couch, which he was fine with.... Anyway the room was quite comfortable with all the accoutrements that one expects with a luxury hotel. Living room featured a large TV with surround sound (though the couch placement was a bit off). Much better view than the smaller suite we have had in the past- Carneigie Hall... Toto toilet in the main bedroom bathroom of the suite. Other things I liked: great comfortable bed and oh did I mention tons of space? Things my kids liked: the heated Toto toilet- I've never seen the poop so much and the TV in the mirror... oh and they loved all the closets to climb into... Here are some pics. IMG_5682.jpgIMG_5683.jpgIMG_5686.jpgIMG_5687.jpgIMG_5692.jpgIMG_5693.jpgIMG_5695.jpgIMG_5697.jpgIMG_5721.jpgIMG_5723.jpgIMG_5733.jpgIMG_5816.jpgIMG_5829.jpgIMG_5831.jpgIMG_5833.jpg

Amenities

We really only used the pool... which is awesome... as well as the hot tub... probably the best thing in the world to have with 3 kids.. actually my nephews also came over and swam too... did I mention it's the best thing when one travels with kids? such a luxury! I've used the exercise room in the past which was torture, but fine...

Dining

We ordered room service our first night in... the in house restaurant, Bevy, actually closed a couple days prior to our arrival... I'm not sure if the limited room service menu reflected this but the room service menu was indeed limited... However, what does three kids and their hungry Mom and Dad really want after a long drive? Burgers it seems... so we ordered burgers (plus pasta for the little little one).... Just in case you're wondering, the difference between a burger and a kid's burger is red onion and $14.....

Note the distint lack of red onion on the kid's burger... pretty sure everything else was the same... the lobster bisque was a little different than I was used to and just didn't pack as much flavor punch as I would like....

Breakfast was in every day. I never really thought that any of the savory dishes really hit high marks (I had the lobster scramble and salmon benedict) but my wife they did a really nice job on the scrambled eggs. The french toast was a huge hit with the kids, as well as the pork sausage. Of note, my oldest required two orders of kids french toast to fill up (which was still cheaper than the adult order)... The whipped cream and berries however, were a huge hit with mom!

Service

I had low expectations coming in on the service front.... and well I guess they met me low expectations.. starting off by the poor doorman service, which seemed to be the standard here... they never had any doormen out and about on the street.. just standing behind a podium inside... there was no ackowledgement or recognition that we were traveling with our kids... for example, at the PH in Chicago they sent up kid sized bath robes, we got cookies and milk delivered every night (which were uh eaten by the adults), binnoculars and coloring books as well... also similar touches at the PH in DC... at the PH in NY we got.... nothing... the welcome amenity contained 3 choclate truffles and 2 bottles of Voss water... which was nice but hardly appropriate for a family of 5....

I will say that they did replenish the Asian pears which were deliciousIMG_5719.jpg

Though the pool was awesome, they did a crummy job keeping the towels stocked.. which is a shame because there was a attendant/guard always present...

I will say, that housekeeping was awesome.. they did a great job cleaning up after our crew and an even better job recognizing that the occupants were coffee addicts. In addition, we broke a glass (oops) and they came quickly to rectify the situation...

Check Out

Check out time and guess what- my bill wasn't correct becasue the charges all went to one room, yet we had two rooms... so my virtuoso credits and breakfast charges weren't applied correctly... even after I asked at check-in... it took another 15 minutes to get that sorted out... and it wasn't even sorted out correctly until I pointed out again to the front desk clerk... again no offer of aid for our bags...

Post Checkout

Upon arriving home, kid #3 realized she had left her blankie (by realized I mean freaked out)... I called the hotel and got transferred to the head of security who promised to look into it and get back to me... of course I never got a call back... I got the post stay survey which I filled out with the same service lapses that were noted in this review... I did get a reply from a manager who did inform me that there were indeed kids amenities available... and promised to look into the blanket, which apparently and unfortunately was never found...

Overall

service issues aside, which I knew about before hand, the hotel is well located and spacious, plus with an awesome pool. For the price I think it's perfeclty fine for our family travels... I'll probably come back and hopefully get the kids amenities..
