Check In

I had high expectations given all the hype, but although the stay was good, it was probably our worst PH stay simply in comparison. We choose Park Hyatts, St Regisand Four Seasons hotels for luxury and privacy. Of all of the Park Hyatts we have ever stayed at this was the most like a Grand Hyatt in terms of the amount of guests. Adding to this is the sheer number of staff who greet you as you pass. I know PHs are about personalised service but after five doormen/women greet you, you are then greeted by the staff at the Peak, the the staff at Girandole then the staff at reception. This can be up to 15 people just on the way to the room.

Dining

Diamond Happy Hour at the Peak Bar was also exceptional in lieu of a Park Lounge. I know most PHs don't have lounges (although MEL and CBR in our home country do) and given the price of cocktails, this benefit was worth hundreds of dollars over our stay. They will make Mojitos, Lychee Martinis, Strawberry Daquiris or whatever else you want. Strangely there is no bar menu, so at the beginning we were confused whether it was just wine and spirits and different staff gave conflicting information. The canap's rotated every night and the DJ played soft RnB which gave a very nice vibe. 4 hours of canap's and cocktails is very generous.

I've covered breakfast, and for the rest of our stay we ordered room service. Often room service was busy, but the operator arranged for them to call us back. Food was always delivered within 20 mins. I should add that for a 5 star hotel, let alone a Park Hyatt the pricing was very good. We paid around 2,500 JPY per main. I should add they take allergies seriously. I ordered a Nasi Goreng for me and Penne Bolognese for my husband and when they asked if we had allergies they took out the prawn crackers, prawns and satay in the Nasi Goreng. When I called a few days later they had a record of the allergy but they understood when I said I could eat it.

We ate in the basement twice thanks to an earlier poster and the a Tempura restaurant was brilliant. They seem to be small family businesses and we used our limited Japanese and they used their limited English. When ai removed my husband's shrimp, the chef made him a new batch of vegetables which was sweet.

Room

The Park Suite was nice, but again I expected more. The artwork above the windows seemed pointless, the tub only fits one person and there is no door separating the bedroom from the living room, only the bathroom. As such if one person wants to stay up, work or watch TV you disturb the sleeping guest.

We couldn't explain why but suite 4232 has loud noises above it all day and night. We couldn't work out whether it was elevator noise, wind or service staff. We didn't say anything because we couldn't be bothered moving and we sleep well anyway.

Service

The chief concierge was exceptional and helped us plan our days and provide insider suggestions. When visiting Asukura he not only printed a map but also a piece of paper explaining its history, what to do and even what sweets to buy. This was, in my view, exceptional service. I will add that the conceierges without the Clef d'or were basic in their knowledge and ability to communicate instructions or relevant information.

The spa is great and very relaxing. I imagine the 42,000 JPY charge prohibits non Diamond guests. The limitation on visible or lewd tattoos was amusing.

We never took the hotel shuttle to Shinjuku station so every trip out was a cab ride then the train which we knew about. You plan your day around just one trip out as a leisure traveller, however others may not wish to invest the time and money given the location.

Overall

Overall, it was just a nice stay, but nothing memorable. The hotel is just too busy for my liking. It was the complete contrast of the St Regis Osaka where you often felt like the only guests. The StR was certainly more luxurious and a much more beautiful hotel inside.

Given how busy Tokyo is we thought the PH would be a pleasant oasis, and that's certainly what the other two Japanese hotels we stayed in provided, however it was always busy, day or night.

Perhaps next time we'll try the Andaz.
