Stats

We stayed in a 9th floor grand king room at the Pendry San Diego. Given a general lack of luxury properties in the city, we'd consider this the best there is. The other is the US Grant property, which is a few blocks away. The staff at the Pendry is very pleasant, the extent to which surprised us. We stayed at the Pendry Baltimore before and found it similarly pleasant in service.

The hotel in the Gaslamp district, which can be a pro or a con. The area is comparable to the Fulton market area in Chicago - lots of bars, restaurants, music, etc. We did not find street noise a concern during our stay.

Check In

We booked through our Virtuoso TA and were granted a 9am check in with no issue. The staff has soft bunny plush toys for guests with kids.

Room

The grand king room faces the bay - it has an additional chaise over the lower level rooms. The grand king room is the highest level below suites. The room furnishing was a little strange - some things are very new, while others seem to be restored vintage furniture.

The TV has Chromecast.

The mini bar had digital scales on them, and if you moved something and did not put it back quickly enough, you'll likely end up with a bill you won't recognize. The mini fridge too - if you moved anything to make room to cool your own water, you will likely be charged a restocking fee.

The bathroom shower is all glass, which means you can look out the window while in the shower. There is a curtain that can be drawn from outside for privacy. The bathroom only had a single sink, and the counter was unusually deep, which made it awkward at times when you want to lean in closer to the mirror.

Service

When we went, my wife was feeling nauseaoous. So I went down to the bar (Fifth & Rose) to get some sparkling water. I explained the situation to the bartender and he very sympathetically made me a sparkling hangover cure and gave us two bottles of sparkling water to bring up to the room. No mentions of a charge. Not that we cannot afford a sparkling water, but it's great the staff is not trying to nickel and dime us when my wife was feeling sick.

The hotel sent us a cheese and cracker platter, dried apricots, a bottle of Whitehall Lane cabernet sauvignon, and two bottles of Fiji water. We did not drink the wine obviously due to my wife feeling unwell.

Dining

We did not utilize the dining service. The bar was rated highly by our friends.

Location

The Pendry is located in the Gaslamp district. Across the street from Gaslamp Breakfast Co, which has really delicious vegan sandwiches. There is no shortage of retaurant options around, although most are similarly priced. There are lots of bars in the area too, and can be loud on the streets. But from the nineth floor, we heard no noise. T

Pool

The property has an outdoor pool on the third floor with a bar nearby. The pool gets filled quickly usually.FA5BB535-18A8-40C7-B41E-893762D4FA24_1_201_a.jpeg
