Check In

I arrived at the Valley Wing (VW) entrance pretty late in the evening and was offered assistance by the bellman, but declined.  Check-in was held at the lobby desks, they are not traditional check-in decks, but an office desk you sit down at.  The agent was welcoming and outlined my rate and offered me a choice of three welcome gifts from a list of about 10 items.

The lobby itself is stunning.  It featured many chandeliers, marble, glass, and comfy furniture in good contition.

I had my TA book this through a relatively new program called Luxury Circle.  It's similar to Pen Club, MO Fan Club, Ritz Stars, etc.  After going over the check-in formalities, the agent escorted me to my room while going through the benefits of the VW, which are extensive.  They include:

  • Daily breakfast at the Summit Room, which has a small continental buffet and a wide assortment of made-to-order egg dishes and other items.
  • Drinks in the VW lobby throughout the day from about 11-22:30, the list of complimentary items was extensive and included Veuve champagne.
  • Snacks in the VW lobby included items like cookies and crackers, they also offered Afternoon tea in that included finger sandwiches.

In addition to these benefits, there was a welcome letter in my room that outlined the Luxury Circle benefits, which added a $100USD F&B credit, an upgraded room, and upgrade to Jade status in the Golden Circle rewards program.

Room

I was upgraded from an entry-level room to a deluxe one bedroom suite (2 categories).  The room was well laid out, and included a four seat dining table, living area with couches and tv, and a full bathroom in just the first room.  The bedroom featured a king bed, two chairs, a makeup desk, dressing area, and an even larger bathroom.  The bath amenities were acqua di parma, which is not my favorite, but it was not a big deal.

Master bath

After occupying the room for a few hours, the living room smelled funny and I noticed a humidifyer on the floor with absolutely discusting looking liquid in it.  I immediately unplugged it and spent most of my time in the bedroom after that point.  Also, the room was in poor condition.  None of my pictures of the wear and tear came out well, but throughout the room, there were scrapes, scratches, mismatched paint, and even peeling paint.

Dining

Breakfast at the Summit Room was good in the morning, I sampled items from both the buffet and the menu.  Each seemed to be of high quality.  On my first evening, I ordered a sandwich from room service and it arrived pretty quick and also tasted good.  Lastly, I ate lunch at The Line, which is their buffet/all day dining restaurant.  The decor of the restaurant was hideous IMO, but the food and service was impeccable.

Location

The location of the Shangri-La is located somewhat removed from the city center.  It is about a 15 minute walk to the Orchard Rd MRT station, but the hotel does offer a shuttle service at certain hours.  I did not take the shuttle, but can imagine it is convenient during rain storms or extremely hot weather.

Overall

I really struggled with whether or not to recommend the hotel.  I ultimately decided not to because of the condition of the room.  I also will not recommend it because of the clientele.  I don't mean to offend anyone or cause a stir in any way, but I just felt uncomfortable with many of the people.  Now, I am a millenial and dress very casually in most situations and felt out of place and that people were constantly watching me - not the employees, but the guests.  At breakfast, I walked into the Summit Room, and I kid you not, there was not a soul under about 65 years old.  Again, I do not want to offend anyone, I just cannot recommend a place if I feel uncomfortable.

This trip also included several other 5* hotels and I did not feel uncomfortable at any of the other.

Lastly, the hotel is going through some renovations to the Tower Wing and the main lobby.  They did not impact my stay, but be aware that there are renovations going on at other wings and there are certain restaurants and bars that are closed.  It was all outlined when booking and was not a surprise.
